Hardwood Refinishing

Hardwood Refinishing Dry Time & Cure Time

Plan walking, furniture, rugs, cleaning, and pets around the finish on your floor. Understand the milestones before you move back into your rooms.

Plan Your Return

Dry enough to walk on is not the same as fully cured.

A freshly finished hardwood floor needs time before everyday use resumes. Drying and curing are separate milestones: a finish may allow limited walking while it is still developing its final durability. Use the instructions for the actual finish applied, together with your installer's project-specific schedule.

Ask Royal to record the finish product and the date and time of the final coat. Count return-to-use waiting periods from that final coat, not from sanding, staining, or the first coat. If another coat is added, have the schedule updated.

Separate Milestones

Plan walking, furniture, rugs, and cleaning separately.

There is no single waiting period that fits every finish. An early light-traffic allowance does not mean the room is ready for normal household use.

01

Walking

Wait for clearance for light foot traffic and confirm footwear restrictions. Keep traffic limited to the use allowed for your finish.

02

Furniture and appliances

Get a separate return date for furniture, especially heavy pieces and appliances. Fit suitable floor protectors and plan careful placement before moving items back.

03

Rugs, pads, and coverings

Wait until the finish can be covered. Rugs or pads placed too soon can interfere with drying; cardboard and protective paper are not automatic substitutes.

04

Cleaning and normal use

Confirm when cleaners and normal traffic are allowed, and which cleaner suits your finish. For ongoing wood-floor care, avoid wet mops and steam mops.

Pets Need Their Own Plan

Keep claws, running, and water bowls in mind.

Ask Royal when pets can return for your specific finish and household. Light walking permission is not a universal pet-return time. Arrange a separate pet area while the finish develops, and keep nails trimmed as part of ongoing floor care.

Your Finish and Your Home

The product and indoor conditions shape the schedule.

Water-based and oil-based finishes can have different return-to-use requirements, and products within the same group can differ too. Check the exact product instructions instead of relying on a generic online timetable.

Temperature, humidity, airflow, and coating thickness affect drying. Follow the crew's ventilation and indoor-condition instructions. Do not try to speed up the process with strong airflow directly across the new finish.

01

Confirm the finish

Get the product name and its care instructions. Do not assume that a previous project's timetable applies to this floor.

02

Plan essential access

Discuss entrances, stairs, bathrooms, and kitchens before work begins, especially where a refinished hallway connects your rooms.

03

Arrange storage

Plan furniture storage, sleeping arrangements, and a separate pet area. Confirm whether staying home is practical for the affected rooms and ventilation needs.

04

Coordinate the return

Schedule furniture delivery and other trades around the confirmed milestones. Contact Royal if the floor remains tacky or marks easily before putting it into use.

Before the Final Coat

Leave with a clear return-to-use plan.

01

Product and coat time

Which finish was applied, and when will the final coat be complete?

02

Light and normal traffic

When may we walk through, and when can normal household traffic resume?

03

Furniture, rugs, and pets

What separate return dates and precautions apply to each?

04

Cleaning and full cure

When is cleaning allowed, which products should we use, and when is full cure expected?

Dry Time & Aftercare FAQ

Questions about returning to your rooms.

How long does hardwood refinishing take to dry and cure?

The timetable depends on the exact finish and indoor conditions. Drying enough for light walking and reaching full cure are different milestones. Ask Royal for the finish product, final-coat time, and separate return dates for walking, furniture, rugs, cleaning, and pets.

When does the waiting period begin?

Count return-to-use waiting periods from the final coat, not from sanding, staining, or the first coat. If another coat is applied, ask for an updated schedule.

Can rugs go back when we are allowed to walk on the floor?

Not automatically. A floor approved for limited walking may still need more time before rugs or pads can cover it. Follow the finish manufacturer's covering instructions; cardboard and protective paper are not automatic substitutes.

Can we stay home during refinishing?

That depends on which rooms and access routes are affected and the selected product's ventilation requirements. Discuss entrances, stairs, essential rooms, furniture storage, sleeping arrangements, and a separate pet area before work begins.

What if the finish is still tacky or marks easily?

Keep the affected area out of use and contact Royal before cleaning it, covering it, or moving furniture back. Have the finish product and final-coat date and time available.

When can pets return to the floor?

Ask for a project-specific pet return plan. Claws, running, water bowls, and accidents place different demands on a new finish than light foot traffic. Keep pets out until the crew confirms the appropriate return milestone.
